Day 12

1 Activities

-Google Drive can do loads of good things:
  • free space to store documents.
  • 50 gigabites (without google products)
  • use folders to organize your files
  • you can share documents (get shareable link at top right)
  • you can also invite people to work on the document via gMail (then I can track the changes)
  • via gMail shared documents become trackable. You can see who made which changes and when.
If you want to read a file in google (which is not google-based), you need to download it to be able to work with it. To save it in google you then upload it again.

-RSS feed/reader helps you follow blogs of other people, for instance your gurus. Instead of tracking all these feeds you can use RSS feeds to update you on their latest entries.

-Gurus: we could read their blogs or watch their videos on YouTube.

Then we presented our blogs, one after the other.

SnagIt
1. Make in introductory video to show your user how to use your blog.
2. Save video on YouTube
3. Embed on blog in new page

Note: Unlisted means, that nobody can find this video in YouTube. Only available to those who have got the link.

And here is the result:

In the afternoon we filled in the end of course questionnaire.

Russell showed us the silly website.

Day 11

1 Activities

Today Russell has invited a guest: Tony Prince. Russell used TodaysMeet to collect questions for Tony.

We then went back to our case studies. First we answered 7 questions in groups and presented our findings in a google.doc. And here are our results

Issues of Blended Learning

1 Technolgy-driven. Is this the end of f2f
2 What are the objectives? All on-line, blended or only f2f? How far do you want to take it?
3 Keep it alive. Keep linking the f2f and the technology.
4 Buy in, help the students. They get to use tools they can use later in life.

Russell then showed us a TED talk of Sugata Mitra.

There are two questions to be considered:
1. Are our school obsolete?
2. Do we prepare our students well for their future?

Mitra's answer: SOLE (Self Organized LEarning)

In the afternoon Erick had his mini-presentation about GoAnimate. And here is my little animated film girls.

With Videonotes you can tag a video and jump to that place in the video. Here is an example

VideoNotes

3 Ideas
  • Use TED talks.
  • Read John Dewey
  • Check Tony Prince's blog

Day 10

1 Activities

We started the day with a case study from THE blended learning book about teaching English to taxi drivers in Turkey.

Then we all read individual texts and had to present our findings using Google presenter.

2 New Technologies

3 Ideas

  • We can use google docs presenter to collaborate. It works almost like power point.
  • I tried our blogging tool on ILIAS. It is a disaster. It is user-unfriendly and doesn't look half as funky as blogger.

Day 9

1 Activities

First Russell made us work on the topic of VLE (Virtual Learning Environments) in groups and answer some questions. Then he showed us a video about VLE.

Virtual Learning Environment

pure online
blended
pure face-to-face
web-enhanced
no teacher in class
teacher in class

Then he introduced us to edmodo. We logged on as students and Russell showed us a few things:
  • reply
  • post
  • polls
  • quizzes
  • assignment
  • folders
  • tracking

We then logged on as teachers and got started.
In the afternoon Anja had her presentation.

 2 New Technology

edmodo

Edmodo is a repository that is set up like Facebook with posts, likes, answers and comments. It offers most tools that we also have on ILIAS. But it looks much nicer.

3 Ideas
  • Use youtube channel to produce videos (interviews, FCE speaking tests), upload to a shared folder and then encourage group feedback.
  • Video is a must, also on your mobile device
  • Make sure you can link all your devices (google!)

Day 8

1 Activities

We had a look at a range of different models of blended learning:
  • flipped classroom
  • distance learning
  • rotation model
  • flex model
  • a la carte
  • etc.
We discussed the pros and cons of the flipped classroom and also discussed the technolgies that are necessary.

Technologies for the flipped classroom:

In the afternoon Gianni had his presentation about moodle. It was really interesting.
We then continued with some more screen capture technologies.

2 New Technology

Today we got to know some screen capture tools, all by techsmith.

Jing is good for students to use.

SnagIt is good for teachers who want to upload teaching stuff.

Camtasia is more for professional productions.

Here are some more activity pages:

3 Ideas

  • Why not do the flip with my FCE classes and let them tackle the grammar and genres on their own.

Day 7

Horsey
After a long trip with taxi, train, bus and yet another bus I finally made it to Winterton (more or less). We walked along the beach for a good 2 hours. On the way we saw loads of seals in and out of the water. Fantastic!!!

We had lunch at a pub in Horsey, about 20 minutes off the beach. I only had a starter, but even that was too much. Who can eat so much food?

On the way back we chose a path along the dunes through a wonderful nature reserve. What a great day!!!

Day 6

Cambridge! Great trip, good company, fantastic place. Too many people. Here are some impressions:

For lunch we had a jacket potato and in the afternoon we all ran off into different directions. Well, at least I did.
